Help with sleeping

How we can help you

Do you have difficulty getting off to sleep, or do you wake up in the middle of the night? Or are you really sleepy during the day? This is nothing to be ashamed about. And it’s logical that this bothers you. We will be glad to help you. We specialise in sleeping problems in people of all ages. First, we look at what symptoms you have and how they manifest themselves. Then we select an appropriate treatment. We also contribute to scientific research into sleep-wake disturbances. Through this we learn more about the causes and treatments of sleeping problems. We also share this knowledge with you.

Sleeping disorders

Sleeping problems are common and often they disappear of their own accord. If the problems continue over a prolonged period, there may be a sleeping disorder. This can impact on one’s daily life (e.g. performance at school and work), or it may produce physical symptoms. This varies from person to person. At the Sleep Centre we have a lot of experience in diagnosing and treating complex sleeping disorders. The insights that we gain from our scientific research and the experience of our specialists are reflected in the care we provide to our patients.

  • Sleep apnoea
  • Disturbance of the biological clock
  • Night-time restlessness
  • Narcolepsy
  • Insomnia
  • Unusual behaviour during sleep

How we can help with your sleeping problem

The first step is an investigation of your sleep disturbances. We always have a discussion with you first. That is how we find out what sort of sleeping problem you have. We may carry out additional tests. Then we will have an even better idea of what help you need.

One possibility is an investigation of your sleep-wake cycle. This usually takes one or two weeks. We also investigate the quality of your night-time sleep. We prefer to do this in your home, because then you will be relaxed. Sometimes, however, it’s better to do the sleep study in the clinic (e.g. when testing children).

Regardless of what we do, everything is explained to you beforehand. So you know exactly what will happen and why we are carrying out the study.

  • Sleep study at home
  • Sleep study at SEIN
  • Measurement over several days
  • The daytime nap study

Treatment of sleeping disorders

After the study is completed, we discuss the results with you. Our somnologists, neurologists, chest specialists, psychologists, specialist nurses and laboratory technicians work together closely in a treatment team. This team endeavours to find exactly the right treatment for you. We plan the treatment pathway in consultation with you.

There are various possible treatments. Needless to say, the particular treatment that suits you will depend on the cause of your sleeping problem.

  • Treatment for sleep apnoea
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Chronotherapy
  • Medication
