Improved monitoring at home
Wearable devices for continuous seizure monitoring are rapidly advancing within epilepsy care. Several user surveys have clearly demonstrated the pressing need for automated seizure detection. People with epilepsy experience a reduced quality of life, as do their caregivers. Seizures are unpredictable, represent a loss of control, and may lead to life-threatening situations through injury, status epilepticus, and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). The market for seizure detection devices is expanding rapidly, yet the level of performance evidence remains low. Long-term, home-based trials are therefore critically needed to guide the clinical implementation of these new technologies. Wearable technologies also offer excellent opportunities to distinguish “real” sleep disorders from those caused by lifestyle factors, and to improve the monitoring of advanced treatments for sleep disorders.
