An appointment at the outpatient clinic

If you have been referred for specialist epilepsy care by the neurologist, paediatrician or GP, we will contact you to arrange an appointment. You will also receive an invitation with a comprehensive questionnaire. This contains questions about your seizures, medication and side effects.

The pre-admission discussion

The pre-admission discussion is an introductory consultation with a medical specialist. This may be a (paediatric) neurologist, physician assistant or nurse specialist. You will discuss what tests/examinations and treatments you have already had. You can also ask questions. Then the specialist looks into whether you require further investigation, e.g. an EEG scan. You may possibly be admitted to the clinic for a few days for a thorough investigation of the seizures. This will, of course, be discussed with you first.

How to prepare for the pre-admission discussion

  • Collect the latest medication summary from your pharmacy — or give your pharmacy permission to exchange information with us. This can usually be done online.
  • Fill in the Epilepsy Outpatient Clinic Questionnaire. It is advisable to do this with someone who knows you well. He or she can describe what happens when you have a seizure.
  • Make a summary of the seizures using our seizure calendar.
  • Try to make a video of your seizure (or get someone to do this for you), e.g. using your mobile phone.
  • Watch some tips on how to film a seizure.
  • Think about your questions, write them down and take them with you to the discussion.

A pre-admission discussion can be quite stressful, so it’s nice to ask a family member or friend to accompany you. He or she can help you to describe your epilepsy and ask questions.

What to take with you to your appointment

  • The medication summary (to be obtained from your pharmacy).
  • A policy or insurance card from your healthcare insurance provider.
  • Current proof of identity (also for children under 14 years). Read more about the requirement to carry identification in connection with healthcare.
  • The questionnaire (if you have completed this on paper). If you have completed the questionnaire electronically, we will already have received your answers.
  • The seizure calendar or a summary of your seizures.
  • A video clip of a seizure (if you have one).
  • Your list of questions for the specialist.

We need this information in order to help you better. The more we know about your epilepsy, the better equipped we are to select a treatment.

Additional tips

  • What do you absolutely need to know?
  • What are your main concerns in relation to epilepsy?

Take your questions with you on paper and ask your most important question first.
