Collaborations

As SEIN is a centre of excellence, we find it important to collaborate with other organisations and institutions that specialise in epilepsy and sleep disturbances. Sharing information and knowledge with them also enables us to take better care of you.

We have a large network of epilepsy centres, scientific institutions and university hospitals, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Below is a list of our main partner institutions and organisations.

EpilepsieNL

EpilepsieNL is a community of 200,000 people in the Netherlands with epilepsy and members of their families. EpilepsieNL endeavours to improve the quality of life of people with epilepsy by funding research and sharing relevant knowledge. You can contact this organisation for information, personal stories and to make contact with others.

Dutch League Against Epilepsy

The Dutch League Against Epilepsy (NLE) provides information about epilepsy care. Its aim is to bring together people who are professionally involved with epilepsy. The NLE is part of the International League Against Epilepsy (ilae.org)

Kempenhaeghe

Like SEIN, Kempenhaeghe is a centre of expertise in scientific research and training on epilepsy. SEIN and Kempenhaeghe collaborate extensively. One example of this partnership is the Leerhuis Epilepsie (epilepsy study centre) initiative. We also collaborate on a biobank for research into narcolepsy at LUMC (Leiden University Medical Center).

Brain Centre of the UMC Utrecht

Epilepsy surgery is an operation on the brain which aims to stop the epileptic seizures. These procedures are performed by a neurosurgeon. If medication alone is not sufficiently effective against epilepsy, the patient can have surgery. This operation takes place at the Brain Centre of the University Medical Centre Utrecht.

Tests are performed to assess whether a patient is a candidate for epilepsy surgery. These tests take place at SEIN (and other locations).

PsyQ

SEIN does a lot of research into epileptic and non-epileptic seizures and associated problems. Non-epileptic seizures are also referred to as PNES, which stands for Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures. PsyQ is one of SEIN’s collaborators in the treatment of PNES in adults.

SEIN-SKUH Comprehensive Epilepsy and Sleep Centre in Georgia

SEIN collaborates with Simon Khechinasvhili University Hospital (SKUH) in the Georgian city of Tbilisi, sharing knowledge and information. In November 2016 SEIN and SKUH jointly opened an epilepsy clinic, the SEIN-SKUH Epilepsy Centre.

In 2017, the clinic was expanded with the addition of a Sleep Centre. The clinic’s full name is now SEIN-SKUH Comprehensive Epilepsy and Sleep Centre.

International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE)

SEIN has an extensive network geared to setting up collaborative research projects. For example, since 1990 SEIN has been a member of the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), the international organisation for people interested in the medical and non-medical aspects of epilepsy.

Patient organisations

SEIN also has contact with other patient interest organisations involved with epilepsy:
